I have been teaching Native American rug weaving for many years and our looms are in very bad shape. It is difficult to create an art work when the frames come apart. Please help me keep this dying art alive.
I teach a very diverse population of high school students.
They come from a variety of places and have unique backgrounds. They are excited to make art projects and are successful in my craft class. Many students are working hard to learn English, and enjoy working with their hands. My class is unique in that language differences are not a barrier. I can show them the processes. The class is very hands on.
My Project
The looms we are using are 10 to 15 years old. Many parts are broken or bent and it makes the process of weaving more challenging. With the proper tools, students will find more success and end up with a nicer final product. As students weave, they study the Native American patterns, plan and draw a design and then begin to weave. Past students have turned their weavings into place mats, purses and even a dog jacket. They are very creative.
I love to share my knowledge of loom weaving.
It is an art that is no longer taught in most places. I enjoy having my English Language Learners be successful with this project and I know they will have an even better experience with a new loom.
