Weaving Hawaiian Culture and Academic Standards Through Music

My Project

We live in the multicultural state of Hawaiʻi where groups and individuals are proud of their unique heritage and traditions. I teach grades 6-8, which is a time when young adolescents are striving to find their voice, identity, and a way to express themselves. Music is an integral component of the Hawaiian culture, bringing joy to the larger community.

Giving students voice and choice in authentic performance assessments increases their engagement with, and enjoyment of, subject matter.

In a time of academic emphasis on meeting state standards and testing, students can use these ukuleles to demonstrate their learning and command of concepts. The ukuleles can be used for student-centered learning across disciplines. Help us bring joy into our classrooms!
