Weaving Earth Connections with Braiding Sweetgrass
Help me give my students a class set of the Young Adult version of Braiding Sweetgrass, the brillant woven narrative that connects "Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teaching of Plants," as well as pens for nature drawing.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are STEMM Scholars who are deeply interested in the sciences and learning more about tangible climate action. They love to visit our garden, observe the seasonal changes, take refuge in the beauty of the natural world. Our time there inspires rich, sensory-filled writing and deep social-emotional-natural learning.
The young adult version of Robin Wall Kimmerer's book, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants, offers vital thinking for today's scholars and scientists, and will be a powerful tool for reflection on our garden visits.
From how to think more carefully about the dignity of the natural world, to how to show gratitude for its bounty and vitality, to resisting the crush of our consumeristic society, these essays offer insight and inspiration to us all. They will launch our 2025-26 school year with Indigenous-grounded wisdom, ever more vital in our hustle-bustle modern lives. The sets of pens will help us illustrate our nature writing with hints of color.
