My Project

My 1st Grade Class of 20 students is thriving through learning to read, write and excelling in their math skills. One of the main reasons of these flourishing skills, is that these children are starting their education in the grades through a balanced approach of thinking, feeling and willing. What Rudolf Steiner calls: the head, heart and hands education that inspires the spirit of the child while eliciting academic excellence through educational artistry. Among the many visual arts we explore in class such as painting, drawing we work on knitting and sewing and we are looking forward to start weaving and wet felting.

Two hands working together teams together the two sides of the body and the two hemispheres of the brain.

Handwork brings balance between intellectual and creative activities. The rhythmic repetition of this task strengthens a child's concentration and hand-eye coordination. It also enhances math skills through counting rows and stitches, measuring out patterns, and creating three-dimensional items. Children learn to correct their mistakes and value quality, utility, and hard work. As the children complete increasingly difficult tasks in small steps, they develop self-confidence necessary to tackle much larger tasks in their future academic and professional lives. Handwork also fosters focus and concentration, perseverance, planning and attention to detail.

I firmly believe that enhancing the use of hands in our 1st Grade Class through weaving and wet felting, will actively improve their cognitive function. Giving the active mind a rest by engaging it in a totally different way, helps the mind relax, recharge and allows them to process all the reading and math problems in the background. Handwork is the foundation of academic success and I would like to offer this gift to our class!
