My students need a weather station to give them the hands-on experience they need to learn and understand the principles of meteorology/weather and how it affects them.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Grabski's classroom raised $1,627
This project is fully funded
My Students
Imagine trying to learn the principles of weather & climate with a weather station that’s about 40 years old. Half of the sensors don’t work. We’ve been limited in what we can do for hands-on science in understanding weather patterns and predictions (our curriculum) due to a lack of good equipment.
This year I teach one 7th & four 8th grade science classes at a traditional junior high (grades 7-9) in Wisconsin with a student population of about 735 students.
Each grade level has 1 section of “accelerated” science students and 8 sections of “regular” science students. My classroom serves a wide variety of learners, from Learning Disabled to English Language Learners to “gifted” students with a variety of ethnic backgrounds in a small urban city. Our students also come from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. However, one thing all of our students have in common is their desire to learn!
My Project
As department chair, to better prepare our students with 21st Century skills, I have organized a fundraising campaign with a goal of raising $71,000 to enable our department to gain the technology needed to give our students the 21st Century Skills they need to succeed in a global economy. To date we have raised about $61,000, but due to the economy our effort has stalled! Studies have shown increased student engagement and knowledge retention when allowed to use technology in a meaningful educational setting.
I had a team of students’ research weather station systems. We found a system that would be able to record data and send it to multiple classrooms. This system will be able to serve all our science classrooms and therefore every student in our building! Students will now be able to collect and analyze weather data and then learn to predict weather events in the future. I can’t believe how excited they are, hoping that they will be able to use this new weather station!
Weather affects everyone every day!
I know this is a rather large request but you can make it possible for my students understand the weather processes, analyze real-time data, and predict future weather events! Gone are the days when teachers stand in front of the room and “pour knowledge” into students heads through lectures. Children learn best with real science. We need to incorporate current technology to accomplish that. This project will allow that to happen, but only with your help.
