Have you ever wondered if you could do a better job forecasting the weather than a weatherman? That question comes up a lot, especially here in Indiana where we have all four seasons, sometimes all in the same day. I would like to challenge my students to create and air their own weather forecast.
Many of my students come from homes where it is not likely that they will come into contact with scientific instruments,especially those that require background knowledge in science.
Using technology, I am trying to spark an interest in some core science standards with my students so they may choose a career in the growing scientific sectors that could ensure a higher paying job for their futures.
My Project
The idea for my project came from the fact that the state of Indiana has recently changed our standards to include weather and climate in the 8th grade Science standards. I am always looking for new and exciting ways to get my students involved in their education.
I believe that this unit will allow students to learn about weather in a variety of different ways. It will allow my students to gain knowledge about different weather systems and also what conditions cause them. They will also learn about and use some of the scientific instruments that are regularly used to predict weather. Also they will create their own weather instruments that they will be able to take home with them to use on their own time. They will finish the unit by actually using the instruments and knowledge that they gained to forecast the weather as if they were meteorologists themselves.
We need two FlipUltra Camcorders to create weather forecasts to air on the student announcements. Students will get behind a camera and tape a segment that will be played on the morning announcements for the entire school.
