Weather Investigation Station

After a trip to a real weather station located at Roper Mountain Science Center in Greenville Co., South Carolina, my students were enthused about weather. They were excited to learn about and touch all of the different instruments used to create a real weather forecast. It inspired me to try and create a weather station for them on our campus. I would like to set up a weather station that has a weather vane (wind vane), anemometer, giant rain gauge, hygrometer, barometer, and thermometer for the outside, and a large weather map/plotting chart, student weather forecasters, cloud chart, a cloud making apparatus, cloud and weather cycle books with models, a mini weather station and a blank, large scale weather tracker that is similar to what is published in newspapers for the classroom. All of these materials will help support South Carolina science curriculum standards for weather, but also the information gathered from the weather station can be used for math activities such as graphing, comparing numbers, and measurement. Our school population is 38% low income, but our poverty rate is 50.8%, according to the State Department of Education Website. I feel that it is important for all of my students to have the opportunity to experience the excitement of learning about real weather. After all when people don't know what to talk about, they talk about... the WEATHER!
