My Students
My 22 students are a very diverse group of great first graders in Georgia. Some of my students have special needs, some of my students qualify for the gifted program and most of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Several of my students are diagnosed with ADHD and ADD. But, they are all wonderful and so eager to learn. We work in various settings throughout the day, like whole group, small group and independent work. Our school is an inner city school and in a high poverty area.
My Project
I would like to offer my students experiences that will last by providing active engagement in environmental science activities. I want my students to create, get their hands dirty in the content, and explore all areas of learning. I want to provide rigorous activities that engage them in cross-curricular learning. My students will research and discover knowledge about environmental science concepts without using textbooks.
I will use tools, literature, and other materials to created an environment that is engaging, fun, and motivating for my students.
The materials will transform my classroom into a meteorologist’s laboratory where the students will become the meteorologists as they dive into rigorous content in environmental science, weather, geography and literature. The books will bring weather like snow and blizzards to my south Georgia students who have never been exposed to real winter weather. The weather lab kit will be used by my students to track and graph weather and compare weather around the country. By doing this my students will be using math and geography skills.
Thanks to Tom's of Maine for their concern about our environment. A concern I hope my students will carry on.
