This project will allow our students to create wearable art that is a combination of graphic design and bandhandi (from the Sanskrit verb ‘bandh’ meaning “to tie” ) textile dyeing. Silkscreen printing is an accessible medium that will allow the students to place intricate designs on multiple pieces of clothing or cloth.
Creating your own silkscreened graphics and tie dye designs and wearing them is empowering!
It also ties in to a rich history with cultural significances. The process of designing for a silkscreen is rich in graphic design lessons. The creation of the screens and printing them is a collaborative process that requires team work and a community minded attitude. The earliest examples of tie dye go back as far as 4000 BCE. We will be able to explore earliest tie dye from Indian textile dyeing, look at the 8th century Japanese Art of Shibori, the Great Depression when the US Government handed out pamphlets teaching people how to Tie Dye old cotton and sacks to make clothes, finally look at American counterculture movement, synonymous with colorful tie dye.
This project brings together history, science, art and fashion. The student will be able to wear the products of their efforts proudly!
Students will learn about color layering, shape, line, transparency, and positive/negative space. Creating the dye baths, mixing the reactive dyes then creating patterns by tying and twisting fabrics before they are dyed with indigo shibori and tie dye process will create create exciting colors and designs. Our students are interested in the awareness, process and sustainability of slow fashion. They are creative and like to turn heads, especially if it can raise awareness of important issues.
