Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a Library & Technology teacher, I see close to 900 students come into our school library every week, Our library services 1st through 5th grade. For many of these boys and girls, this is one of the few places they will see such a large selection of books.

My students deserve to come to a school where their needs can be met and where they can feel success in all areas.

My students come from predominantly immigrant households where English is a second language. Their parents work long hours, many with multiple jobs to make sure they can provide for their families. They want to give their children everything they can, and so do I.

My students are thoughtful and creative. They work hard to overcome learning difficulties and language barriers. They have a thirst for knowledge, but unfortunately they face many barriers that inhibit success. It is important to me that my students understand that success in school is more than being able to score well on a test. I want to provide my students with what they need to reignite their curiosity and passions--where they can explore and feel part of a community.

My Project

My 4th graders are preparing for their NY State science exam. In an effort to help them, we have decided to spend library time focusing on some prominent topics on the test. One of those topics is electricity and circuits. I am going to teach my students about circuits and as a culminating activity they would like to make wearable LED light up accessories.

My students will design, print, and assemble their own wearable technology.

It is one thing to draw out a design or to create a circuit on paper. However, to be able to apply what you have learned in school into real life is a huge life lesson to students. My students will be creating their designs on the computer and using the Cricut, they will see their designs come to life. It is important for them to know that what they are learning is relevant to their daily lives. Engineering can be a future career path for these students and I want them to know what it is like to tinker with something and to see their ideas happen. Also, as far as college and career readiness, it is entirely possible for them to start their own business creating and selling items.

After their accessories are assembled, my students will take their understanding of circuits, and apply it to their design. Students will be using LED diodes, and batteries to create their create their closed circuits. Students will have to use the materials presented to them to create a switch which will allow their lights to turn on and off. My students will apply their understanding of how to create a closed and open circuit to create their piece. It will be so exciting for them to see their dreams and creation come to life.
