Wear Your Button-Artistic Buttons

My students need a button maker machine and the components to create artistic buttons. Students love to show off their art and what a better way than to wear it!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were, but without it we go nowhere", Carl Sagan said. And as Elliot Eisner said, "Art is the literacy of the heart." My students' hearts have not been opened to art and they are not confident that they can use their imagination to create art.

My students are form a very low economic status and background in LA.

Almost all of them have been exposed to poverty and some sort of violence in the neighborhood or family, and it is hard for them to believe that there is more to life than where they are at. As old as they are (in HS.) most of them have not even used a color pencil or watercolors before they come to my art class. They have never had any art classes before. So you can see that their imagination has not been nourished and nurtured like some others. I have seen extreme changes in a lot of my students since they have started art. A new world has been opened to them. I often tell them that art does not have to be complicated.

My Project

Everyone goes crazy for buttons. I have seen students collect simple buttons and pin them all over their backpacks. So I thought why not do art Buttons. Teach them various styles and techniques and allow them to be creative and make their own artistic buttons, wear them, show them off, and be proud of what they have created. I also think the students can use the button making machine for different activities to create the buttons for various events which they will participate in and attend. It can help them and teach them leadership in so many levels. ie. College fairs, Debates, fundraisings...

As I always say "Art doesn't have to be complicated".

It takes something as little as an artistic button maker to boost the students confidence and taking it further and do more with it. Would it be nice to make buttons saying, "I did well on my CST" or "I passed my CAHSEE", and wear them to show off and encourage other students to do as well?
