This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach Math in a Title I school. My students are Special Education students. They also live in a low income NYC area, where they are surrounded by depression, drugs, gangs, etc.
The children that I encounter on a day to day basis are faced with insurmountable obstacles.
Some live in shelters, others have parents who are incarcerated, siblings in gangs, etc. Often they are stressed and frustrated with their environment. My children come to me when they need an outlet for their frustration.
My Project
As part of the new Common Core standards, students are required to understand the many ideas and concepts related to math. I try my best to make lessons interactive and engaging with as many hands on activities as possible. We are lacking some of the necessities to make this possible including Mastering Math Vocabulary Pocket charts; Giant Geometric Shape Models, Positive/Negative Number Sliders, Real World Math Problem Solving Kits and a variety of storage compartments. I am requesting these resources to meet the Special Education individualized needs.
Providing my classes with these supplies would give them opportunities in closing the gap between privilege and poverty.
Your help is desperately needed to help our room function properly. Thank you in advance for supporting education.
