My Students
Our tiny, rural, Title I school is located in Central New York. My students come from a very tight-knit community, in which most of the families have lived for generations. Despite our small size, we have a diverse population and students come from all different backgrounds and experiences.
First graders are made to move!
My 17 students are inquisitive and energetic! I encourage movement and play in my classroom and strive to empower choice for my students. My class is creative, kind, and curious. They work best when they are collaborating and moving. Research has shown the benefits of student choice and flexible seating on learning and engagement. Children spend the majority of their day in my classroom, it is where we are scientists, mathematicians, authors, and readers. Flexible seating is just one way that I can help to meet my student's needs in this space.
"Sitting still is overrated. It makes sense for the opera or for meditating, but in most classrooms and child care centers, it's given far more honor than it deserves. Children need to move." ~Tom Hunter, National Association for the Education of Young Children
My Project
My first graders are amazing, inquisitive, and lively students. I am in the process of restructuring our classroom to provide a more student centered learning experience. One way to do this is with flexible seating options.
Providing student choice helps to engage kids in their learning.
Student choice in seating allows students to work not only in the way that is best for them, but also allows us to create various areas and spaces within our classroom to collaborate and explore.
My students are 6 and 7 years old. While some students work best at a table with chairs, I find that many students are gravitating towards our small selection of alternative seating. I had to add more bouncy bands and wobble cushions to our classroom after seeing how much the students enjoyed having those, several students prefer working on the floor with a lap desk, and other students prefer using our two standing desks.
This low table and floor chairs will provide an additional area for my
students to use based on their needs, and will help transform our classroom into a student centered space.
