This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My second graders come from very different homes with very different experiences. Whether they are native Swahili, Burmese, Spanish, Vietnamese, or English speakers, they all bring something distinctly beautiful to our classroom. Despite their cultural differences, we come together in our little classroom community to do great things! 97% of the families at our school qualify for the free and reduced-price lunch program. You won’t see their socioeconomic status holding them back! Their thirst for knowledge has helped them move mountains! I love seeing my students (current and former) change the world around them!

My Project

Energy is high in our classroom. My students love to work around the room and I give them plenty of opportunities to do so. When it comes to working at our desks, our space can be pretty limited. Our desk areas are pretty compact and our busy bodies sometimes need help staying in their own space. I currently have two wobble chairs that are shared throughout the classroom. In order to sit in our wobble chairs, our feet need to be on the floor, our backs are straight, and the chairs are pulled all the way up to the desk. The chairs really encourage good posture and small activity. The bigger our class gets, the more wiggly kids come through the door. If we had some more wobble chairs and some bouncy bands, I can encourage movement for more kids while they stay in their own space. They can take their chairs around the room with them to allow opportunities for flexible seating while getting their wiggles out. These seating options really help those kiddos get their wiggles out while not interfering with the learning of others.
