I teach a group of first grade students who live in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky. There is an equal mix of girls and boys. They are fun-loving, bright, energetic, and extremely eager learners. They each absorb information like a sponge, and love learning.
They are at a very critical time in their life, the beginning stage of reading and writing.
Their focus should be on learning, rather than what they don't have or what they need to be successful in school.
I am requesting ink pens, sheet protectors, and rubber bands to be used to reinforce and review 1st grade skills. The sheet protectors will be used to place handouts within. Students will be able to write and erase using dry erase markers. This will allow for the protectors to be used for years to come, reinforcing sight words, fluency skills, phonics, and comprehension skills. The rubber bands will be used to contain their work within their folders. Each student has a working folder that is filled with their assessments and work as it is completed. To ensure their work is contained these rubber bands will be used, securing the contents within. Also, I am requesting ink pens to add to their word work station. Pencils are the standard medium. However, students enjoy writing with markers, crayons, and I would like to add pens for interest. Finally, I am requesting charm pops and suckers to be used as motivators. These will be given as treats and rewards.
