Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students hail from diverse backgrounds, but many share a common thread - they live below the poverty level. By the time the morning bell rings, they've already faced obstacles. Some are homeless and hungry, others neglected by absentee parents. Most receive free breakfast and lunch. School is their haven, the one safe, structured environment where warmth and care are part of a daily routine. It's the place they are excited to spend their days and embrace new experiences. These children, ranging from ages 5 to 12, are just beginning a journey as lifelong learners. With some extra guidance and support, all are capable of achieving success.

My Project

Our school is on the outskirts of a high crime, high poverty city. Resources are slim. Aspirations are high and teachers here go the extra mile to provide high quality learning experiences, often digging deep into their own pockets. Recent budget cuts meant decreasing salaries, impacting the staff's ability to pick up the slack. Our school has a student population of more than 800 and just one set of leveled books for the building to use during reading groups. So often, the materials we need have been checked out by other teachers. A second set of books would would mean twice as many students receiving valuable literacy instruction, thus and paving the way for them to become independent readers.
