This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach Kindergarten in the heart of the Excelsior District in San Francisco, CA. My students come from very diverse backgrounds. My school is a Title I school and participates in the free reduced breakfast and lunch program. The majority of them are English Language Learners, speaking languages such as Russian, French, Tagalog, Spanish, and Cantonese. Most of my students' first experience in school is when they come into my class excited to learn.
There is never a dull moment when you enter my classroom.
My students are very energetic and happy to be at school. They come into the classroom every day focused and thrilled to be with their classmates. We developed a tight-knit classroom community where we help and learn from each other. My students and I know our classroom as our "second home away from home" and that we are an addition to each other's family.
My Project
My document camera has been broken for the whole year last school year and has not been replaced. I have done my best to make do without one but I've noticed that kids would try to squint their eyes when they would try to look at books and student work when I would hold it up in front of the class. I've also noticed that some students would tune out because it seemed that if they couldn't see anything, why even try. I always had to ask students to sit closer to me when I show books and student work to them, but on hot days, this gets uncomfortable since all our bodies are so close together in a non-air conditioned classroom.
The document camera would make Writing Workshop and reading activities much more fun to be a part of.
My students will be able to fully participate since they will be able to see EVERYTHING on the screen. This will make showing their writing much more exciting because it will be blown up for everyone to see!
The pens will be used throughout the year in Writing Workshop as well. The black pens are for writing their stories. The blue pens will be used for editing.
Teachers at my school are limited on receiving copy paper. We only get 3 packets of paper a semester! Teachers have to provide it on their own if they need more. And almost always, we always need more! Having all this copy paper will allow me to print out blank book templates for Writing Workshop. They will be able to write as many books as their hearts desire! I will also be able to print homework and other worksheets needed to aid in my students' learning.
