This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Children learn in different ways. Many children are visual learners. Others enjoy hearing material. There are students who need to organize information. Either way, a document camera will allow me to meet the needs of all students in my room.
My class is comprised of 12 multi-cultural, ESL students with multiple disabilities.
Despite their disadvantages they come to school each day eager to learn. When taking their disabilities into account, their achievements are remarkable. Very rarely do I hear "I can't," or "I am not able to". My students learn in a number of ways. One of which is through the use of visual supports, such as pictures and video. When I give them the ownership of these pictures and video, it only enhances their learning. Technology has certainly leveled the playing field for my students; it allows them to have similar learning experiences to that of their "non-disabled" peers.
My Project
Our school currently has just one document camera. This technology allows me to show my students what I am writing and where I am writing it. The document camera also allows students to display their work with our in class projection system. This motivates students to do their best when doing their class work.
English as Second Language students (ESL) need all the visual means to increase their proficiency of the English language. By obtaining a document camera the students will be have more opportunities to improve their English skills. This tool will facilitate conversation in a "natural way". It is this natural conversation that builds language skills. ESL students also need multisensory stimuli in order to facilitate language acquisition. A document camera will do just this, it will allow me to provide visual cues to the students.
As an educator I am always trying to motivate my students as well as find more effective ways to educate them.
Learning a new language can be very challenging. However, with the proper resources this challenging can be made just a bit easier. By securing a document camera, I will be able to do this for my students.
