Although the COVID-19 pandemic has passed, the effects are still long lasting. Our school’s air conditioning system has been in constant repair for as long as the COVID-19 pandemic. Supply chain issues, personnel issues, and restrictions at work sites have delayed the repair of our central air conditioning system. Although it was fine for classrooms to open their windows, our school’s library was not designed to have windows that open and could not be ventilated. This caused our school to lose the majority of our books to mold. It has been devastating to see our once well-stocked bookshelves empty. The good news is that the air conditioning is repaired and the library has been renovated, however, it will take a while to rebuild our library’s inventory.
My goal is to interest and engage my students in reading through small group novel studies.
Students will select books of interest and form a group with other students who have selected the same title. Research has shown that novel studies among young readers can help students develop their reading skills, build critical thinking skill, forge a deeper attachment to books, establish a community of readers, and exposes kids to different types of literary voices and styles. Making reading a social event also fosters new friendships, develops leadership skills and builds better communication strategies. Examples of the book titles I have chosen are:
Believe by Julie Mathison
The Boy in Striped Pajamas by John Boyne
Beyond the Bright Sea by Lauren Wolk
Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate
Counting by 7’s by Holly Goldberg Sloan
These books, and the others I have selected, are from “bestseller” lists, recommendation by our librarian and other teachers on our staff.
