Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help us learn beginning sounds! Kindergarten is all about the basics, and you can help get us where we should be!
I teach kindergarten in a high-need area for Chicago Public Schools in Chicago, IL.
The thirty students in my class are transient, come from low-income families, and are not given the opportunities other children receive prior to coming into kindergarten. My students love to read, and they love to work in small groups!
My Project
I love to use hands on materials and create working literacy centers for my children. The only part of my teaching that is very difficult, especially in kindergarten, is the preparation and financial issues. It seems like all my energy is put into learning centers, and as a teacher the money is always tight. After purchasing supplies, decorations and extras I cannot squeeze anything more for centers that truly work for kindergarten. The children love centers, and it gives them time to work independently and in small groups. Literacy is so important at this age, and learning the basics is what these centers will provide. Beginning sounds are the basics, and allowing the children to work hands-on with centers is the way to go!. These beginning sound centers would make a world of difference both for me and the kids.
You will make it possible for my students to continue their path to reading.
This gift will keep giving for years to come with other classes. Your gift would mean the world to children that really need your help. Thank you so much in advance!
