My Students

I have 92 sixth-graders who work very hard, despite the circumstances. They come from many different backgrounds. Some do not have a computer or internet at their house. Several of my students receive backpack food on the weekend. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.

Our school is a middle school in rural Virginia.

Many students receive free or reduced price lunch.

My Project

My students need novels to enhance their critical thinking and reading comprehension skills. These novels will be used daily to discuss text, have Socratic discussion, and promote oral language as well. Students enjoy reading novels on topics in which they can relate. This novel, Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie., will be perfect and will hold their interest!

These novels will allow my students to engage in complex text to promote life skills, problem solving, and a love of reading.

My students will benefit from the novels through exposure to enriching vocabulary, plot development, and through the exposure to a different genre of literature. Overall, my students will be reading something that they are interested in!
