This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are, simply stated, amazing. Every day they wake up and make their way to school knowing that they will leave with hours of homework. Most of them won't get home until 7 or 8pm. Many come from low economic households and will be the first in their family to graduate high school and/or go to college. They are under tremendous pressure; they are in teams, clubs, leadership, journalism, photography, film, and are taking, about, 5-6 AP courses. Despite all of this, they are highly motivated, engaged, and eager to learn.
My Project
Many of my students come from low economic households and will be the first in their family to graduate high school and/or go to college. Because they are academic pioneers, many of them do not have a mentor or guide that can support their academic endeavours. Despite this, my students take AP and Honors classes to become academically competitive in the hopes of being accepted into a reputable University.
For this reason, we need books!
These books will help students develop as readers and gain literary knowledge that they will use in my class, college, and beyond. Students will have access to these books and will use them to complete independent reading assignments. Having these books in my classroom will facilitate independent study, and will ensure that all students have an opportunity to be successful.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
