Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I've been teaching "Fences" for all 11 years of my career, and it's consistently a hit with the students. They love grappling with complicated relationships, experiencing the joy and the complexities of the Black exeprience throughout American history, and thinking about how generational cycles impact our lives. The most common question I'm asked at the end of this unit is: "Is there a sequel?" I'm always pleased to tell them that August Wilson wrote a series of 10 plays called the Century Cycle that capture Black life throughout the 20th century.

I want to buy two full sets of the Century Cycle to keep in my classroom.

I consistently have students who are dying to meet more of Wilson's characters and experience more of his worlds. I have been trying to scrounge up a full set of the Pittsburgh Cycle for years, but I only have parts to offer my many interested students. It's time to get our hands on an official, nice set to take a place of prominence on our classroom bookshelf.
