This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We need sight word, word work, and phonics material because we are learning to read like 1st graders. These skills are imperative and a key to successful reading throughout life.
They are kindergarten college-bound students who will tell you that they are on the road to college and want to learn and "get smart" in order to get to college.
They are readers, mathematicians, scientists, thinkers and writers. They are bright and vibrant, and strive to be not just great but excellent (each and every day) and so is the school. Our school is an inner-city elementary/middle school. The school is predominantly low-income and high-minority but the highest of expectations are held for each student in all academic subjects.
My Project
Our goal as a class is to be reading at a 1st grade level. My students receive assessments through the DRA (reading assessment, Phonics screener, and sight word inventory to track their progress. I would like all of my students to master the phonics skills in order to read at this high 1st grade level. It is just as important for them to increase their fluency by mastering sight words. With phonics, word work and sight words materials my students will achieve. They will learn words, grammar rules, sounds, blends/digraphs, and all this will help them read. Coupled (of course) with reading comprehension skills- We will be 1st grade readers!
I have very few materials in order for my students to reach his/her highest potential in terms of language and literacy.
I am a second year teacher and there is little funding for new hands-on, developmentally appropriate materials for my students.
It is imperative for students in an early childhood setting to do hands-on activities to learn. The activities and tools need to be developmentally appropriate. These resources will be reusable for years and will allow my students to achieve.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
