This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Think recorders are just noise makers? Think again! Students who play the recorder enhance their musicianship by not only learning how to read music, but learning how to play as an ensemble. Today's recorder players could be tomorrow's stars!

Our students attend an urban school in Indiana.

Many of our population live at the poverty level. We have 100% free breakfast and lunch for all of our students. These are students who love all aspects of music, but don't have the best resources to create music. They are enthusiastic, creative and every day with them is a constant surprise!

My Project

By learning how to play the recorder, they will be fulfilling one of the National Music Standards (playing an instrument alone and with others), but will gain so many more things. We can continue to teach them good work ethics, by encouraging practice, and how to work together as a class. The look of joy on their faces when they are able to do something successfully is priceless!

My students Love music, and I want them to have the same opportunities as other students.

Just because their families have a financial disadvantage does not mean it needs to carry over into the classroom. My students would be so excited for the chance to play the recorder!
