This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
First grade is a time for learning so many important skills-how to read, count, write and behave like "little ladies and gentlemen". This is what I tell my students every day. But it is also a crucial time to create, explore, express and be imaginative in artistic outlets. That is why the students of my classroom need your help!
My school is based in a very high-need, low-income community. It is in one of the 10 largest inner-city school districts in the country. It is often in great need of simple everyday supplies. I am very lucky to have all the paper and pencils I need to help my students grow as learners, but something else important is missing that will help my students be KIDS-art supplies.
My school is one that is fortunate in that we do have a lot of necessary resources. However, when it comes to paints, paper, scissors, crayons and things of that nature-parents and teachers alike often have to donate these items to the classroom.
I recently acquired 25 sets of scissors for my class and was finally able to introduce some artistic learning into my reading block time. The excitement, happiness and responsibility my students showed me while cutting and pasting their words together drove me to write up this request. They deserve to do more hands-on crafts and learning projects. It will take them to new levels.
I am not asking for a whole lot, just things I know can make my classroom into a warmer, more artistic environment. Crafts involving all learning areas are fabulous for reaching all learners and crafts for holiday times make the room brighter and happier. Children need to express themselves creatively as much as possible and with the paints, brushes and papers I have requested, I know my children can really show me what they are capable of. And, most importantly, have FUN. We could paint golden, red and orange leaves now, smiling pumpkins next. We can use the paper to make collages, cards for our parents at Open House and bright bulletin board displays. The possibilities are endless and the students are anxious to begin, starting with self portraits in watercolor and crayon.
The fact that this website has been so successful shows me not only how good the world can be, but also the endless possibilities when people are kind and choose to donate. My students will learn so many valuable lessons from these supplies, but the most valuable of all will be the lesson shown through your generosity and compassion.
