My students need equipment like foam balls, hula hoops, volleyballs and jump ropes for fun and active games to engage and get moving for a robust physical education.

My Students
Although I will be teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students, my classroom will be supportive, safe, and challenging. Every student will be expected to push the boundaries of their learning by taking risks and thinking outside the box.
Students will be given the necessary tools to be able to start thinking about how their lived experiences have shaped their identities as they navigate the environment they live in.
I will be teaching 88 unique, diverse, and capable students at an urban tk-8 school in Oakland, CA. I firmly believe that each one of these students has something they can bring to the classroom, and something I can learn from. Expectations in my classroom are sky-high because I am unwavering in my belief that high expectations breed the high performance I know every student is capable of.
Each grade has proven to have their own challenges and strengths and I am excited at the challenge of being able to support and push each of my students to achieve their utmost excellence.
My Project
My students attend school in the middle of a particularly crowded area of Oakland. Due to the central location in the city, our school does not have an outdoor track/field or legitimate gym (the gym is used as a cafeteria for lunch). However, students are still relentlessly excited for PE everyday! Goals for PE include teamwork development, a lifelong love for exercise, and generally having a good time! However, we lack basic supplies beyond 3 basketballs to make these goals a reality.
We can only play tag so many times before students crave the competition, dedication, and complexity of more engaging games that require hand eye-coordination, stamina, cardio, and focus.
Thus, I am requesting a set a standard set of foam balls, hula hoops, jump ropes, volleyballs, and soccer balls to offer a wide variation of sports and activities. Foam balls, hula hoops, and jump ropes can serve their immediate purpose but also lend well to adapted games and variations of play for many days. My students have also asked that they be taught more complex games, such as volleyball. Many are interested in learning and I am even more excited to teach them since I played volleyball for many years! Finally, the giant parachute is a time-loved physical education game that allows the entire class to participate together and become more spatially aware.
My school is a Title I school in an urban area. Many students struggle to get proper nutrition as corner shops and junk food permeate every meal of the day. Without regular physical education, many will lose an opportunity to express their natural love for play and fun. It is my hope that these supplies with enable them to get out there and get moving!
