My students are a diverse group of 3-5 year-olds who are eager to discover and learn new things in school each day. They come from several neighborhoods in Chicago to attend our small school on the near west side of the city. Students are eager to learn about one another and the world around them, and as a diverse group they learn from each other every day. Our school strives to educate the whole child by providing engaging learning opportunities, enrichment classes, and after-school programs. It is truly a special community where students, families, and teachers work together.
My Project
Daily physical activity is crucial for young children. Research has shown that physical activity has positive effects on children's cognitive, social, and physical development. My Pre-K students love spending their recess time climbing on the playground, running in the field, and exploring our school's garden.
Unfortunately, our unpredictable Chicago weather doesn't always allow us to go outside for recess.
It is important to me that I am able to provide students with opportunities to develop their gross motor skills even when it is rainy or cold out.
The items I am requesting will allow us to add variety and excitement to our usual movement routines, which will keep kids active and engaged whether we're indoors or outdoors. The balance beam, play tunnel, gonge riverstones, and cones can be used to create obstacle courses for students. The kickball, basketball, and soccer ball can be used by students on our school's field during outdoor recess. The wrist ribbons, beanbags, yoga cards, and movement fun deck will be used as whole group movement activities on days when we need to have indoor recess. On indoor recess days we can also use the pull down screen to utilize online movement resources like GoNoodle in our classroom. I can't wait to see how much the students enjoy using all of these items as we stay active throughout the entire school year!
