My students are working above grade level in most subjects. They love curriculum that is rigorous and open ended and challenging. With the Vex Robotics Unit, my students will learn skills that will prepare them for life in the 21st Century.
I teach Enrichment classes at my school.
My students are the children who have mastered the regular classroom curriculum and are hungry for more. Many of them are academically gifted and in the advanced placement program in our school. I am asking for this donation for my 5th grade students.
Our school is a high achieving school, but we haven't reached our potential. Realizing that we have a duty to meet the needs of all of our students, our school has created a class to target these high potential learners and to create curriculum to push them out of their learning comfort zones.
In my enrichment classroom, I am creating a safe space for my students to learn how to fail and persevere. We are learning that our brain is growing and our efforts are ultimately what create our success.
My students are quick learners and they deserve to be challenged deeply. My greatest joy has been watching my students respond to challenge.
My Project
I will be using the Vex Robotics with my 5th grade Enrichment class, not really to take over the world, but to prepare them for the world in the 21st Century. They will be using the Vex Robotic curriculum to connect to 5th grade Math, Science and Engineering Standards and expanding their knowledge.
We will be constructing robots according to the Vex Curriculum and then using this knowledge as a starting point to build robots to compete in regional and world wide competitions.
The Vex Robotics kit comes with curriculum connections and videos for the classroom, an engineering notebook, software, and all the parts needed to create a robot. The robots are easily programmable for the beginning robotics students, using intuitive software that introduces the students to programming. The advanced robotics students will be learning RobotC language, preparing them for future technical and engineering opportunities.
My students have special needs, but not in the typical sense that you think of special needs.
My students require us as educators and as a community to provide resources for them to be truly challenged. With this rigorous robotics curriculum, my students will become comfortable with the process of failure and resilience. Einstein said, "The only way to avoid making mistakes is to have no new ideas." My students will be learning the process of trial and error, of struggle and triumph.
