We Want To Build A Mars Rover And Have Music Class!

My students need a robot kit to learn about scale and complete a Mars unit and 20 recorders to learn about music, since we do not have a music class.

My Students

In our classroom, we are the world's future "history makers". These students face major behavioral challenges that have caused them to need to leave their school. However, at this alternative project based learning school, students have a chance to start fresh and learn through their interests.

These students are bright and talented, but struggle with their behavior.

Given the right opportunity and task, they are focused, engaged, smiling, happy 7th graders. Our budget was recently cut, and there is no money for classroom supplies. The unit that the students are working on not only encompasses 7th grade math, science, and writing standards, but high school standards as well. They are working extremely hard on this and deserve the best. Through this project, they will increase their college readiness and be able to participate in activities that will enrich their education. Since we are an alternative school, we have even less resources available to us than other schools, so we need your help!

My Project

When I asked the students who would like to build a model robot as part of our Mars unit, every hand shot up. When I asked who would like to learn how to play a musical instrument, they said they would love to, but asked, who would teach them music? They shouldn't worry, I will! The specific materials that we are requesting are 4 Tin Can Model Robots, to give students the experience of building a robot and having a capstone to our Mars Mission Experience. We are also requesting 20 plastic recorders (instruments) as many of our students are interested in music. The ability to play or read music has been proven to increase verbal skills, which many of our students are sufficiently behind in because of the achievement gap.

This project is important to my students because this unit is pushing them to go beyond the textbook and become a well rounded learner and leader.

With the recorders and the robots, they can get the best education possible despite the lack of resources that our school faces.
