My Students
My 1st graders are not motivated to learn and already feel like they can't be successful. I want to change this. 1st grade is suppose to be exciting and a time when they take in everything. My students don't get the encouragement to do their best at home, it is all left up to me.
My students come from poverty stricken homes and most don't know how good it feels to succeed.
My classroom is a 1st grade integrated room in New York. A lot of my students come from broken homes or live with other relatives because their parents have made a wrong choices in their lives. All of my students are visual learners and my school doesn't have the resources that the teaches need and technology is one of these resources. I have 11 special education students in my room that need more support. I want to ensure that I am doing everything I can to help them succeed.
I can't tell you how many times I have looked over and seen the tears of my students because they are frustrated. They have it in them to be great learners and it is my responsibility to make this happen. The students I work with need quality materials and hands on materials. They need to learn in a variety of ways and need to know what it feels like to be successful.
My Project
The leveled books will be placed in the classroom library, where students choose their own books. By having books at their independent reading level, this will get them motivated to read. It will also show them they can read on their own and be successful. The books will give them the opportunity to enjoy reading.
When it comes to math, I find my students to be very bored in the way the lesson is presented. I try my best to make things fun and hands on, but I don't have what I need to do this. The manipulatives and games will be used in small group and in centers. Right now, my class doesn't do centers because we have nothing for them to use. The students will be able to complete these centers independently while reinforcing skills taught.
The reading manipulatives and sets will be used in guided reading, shared reading and centers. The kids will just love them. Again, the centers will help students feel successful because they can do it on their own.
All of these materials will show my class how much fun learning can be and how successful they can be.
Without them, our learning will continue but my class wont be as involved or motivated to learn. My class really needs fun activities and resources that make them smile.
I provide them with all that I can. 1st graders deserve the chance to start their education out with excitement. They shouldn't be feeling defeated in their learning already. Quality materials can change their outlook.
