My students need science manipulatives such as: thermometers, eyedroppers, graduated cylinders, measuring tapes, beakers, flashlights, hand magnifiers and safety goggles.
Children are fascinated by the world and enjoy opportunities to explore it. Students can best acquire science concepts and skills by means of an inquiry-based, hands-on approach that focuses on the processes and techniques of discovery. This approach will lead to a positive attitude toward science.
I teach in a K-3 school with a population of 580 students with 35 teacher units.
We have approximately 40% of our student population on free or reduced lunch. Due to cutbacks and proration our funding has been cut severely. We are concerned about the BP oil spill and how it has affected our community and families. Our schools are funded through our tax dollars which have been drastically reduced due to the decline of tourism and local spending in our county. We are often looking for creative ways to get funding to continue providing our students with a research based and data driven education. Funding of this project will bring a level of dynamics to my classroom that would stimulate student learning to the highest level.
My Project
Students love investigating. I use investigation manipulatives as often as I can during my science instruction. However, I am limited with materials. We are in need of investigation materials such as thermometers, eyedroppers, graduated cylinders, measuring tapes and cups, beakers, flashlights, hand magnifiers and to encourage safety during science investigations we need safety goggles. I will use these materials to teach various science concepts such as: The water cycle, space, chemical testing, and investing rocks and minerals. Teaching of these concepts with a hands-on, inquiry based approach will require these types of materials.
Students love being scientist.
I encourage my students to role play the kind of scientist our investigation relates to. If we are studying the water cycle we are hydrologist. With the materials I am requesting for my classroom, students will be encouraged to continue their investigation of science concepts outside the classroom as well. Taking a love for learning outside the classroom is one goal I set for myself as a teacher.
