This is my first year teaching and since school has not started yet I don’t know my actual students. However, I can tell you all about them. I am teaching in an impoverished rural county in Florida. The students I will be teaching made a very low grade on the reading/ELA state-mandated standardized testing. These students’ backgrounds are as diverse as the students themselves. Many of these students do not have access to books or technology at home.
I will be remediating these low readers, helping to bring them up to grade level in their reading abilities.
I will be incorporating a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are!
My Project
I am teaching in an impoverished rural county in Florida. My students' backgrounds are as diverse as the students themselves. Many of these students do not have access to books or technology at home. I will be teaching remedial reading, as my students all need to be brought up to reading-on-grade-level. Our school has a reading requirement for extracurricular participation which makes it difficult for low readers to participate. There is also an incentive program for the milestones of becoming a Million Word Reader. I want to help these students be a part of our school's programs and in turn boost their morale.
The Scholastic magazines will be used to create a home to school connection.
We will go over the stories in class to make the students “experts” in the information and they will in turn “teach” someone at home the same information. The donation of the books will create a classroom library and give the students an opportunity to have a wide range of reading material.
