This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Mentally and physically challenged high school students need art supplies to help them enhance the learning of life skills, improve fine motor skills, and the use of their imagination.
Our high school consists of 95% minority students who receive free and/or reduced lunch.
My class consists of 20 students ranging from ages 14 to 22. The students have physical and intellectual disabilities which include cerebral palsy, Down's Syndrome, Trisomy 19, and Addisone's Disease. Several students are in wheelchairs, use walkers, or need assistance in walking. Students have social/emotional needs, adaptive behavior needs, speech and language assistance. Art supplies would be used to provide opportunities for communication, fine motor skills development, creativity, and self esteem.
My Project
My students rarely sit still and listen to a story or lesson. They need to be active! Art supplies would allow them to experience daily hands-on projects. They can learn colors, shapes, letters, and numbers while using their imagination and creativity. Hands-on activities will allow them to learn and retain more information. Their self esteem will improve as they "show off" their creations to family, school staff (we like to visit the administrative and secretarial staff with our art work), and their peers (we have several bulletin boards in the hallway).
Many of my students do not have access to art supplies in the home.
With continued budget cuts, students are having limited access to art supplies in school. With your help they can draw, paint, glue, and create while at school. Art is educational, fun, silly, and messy. Due to the "messy" part, I have also requested some cleaning supplies (another valuable lesson for my students).
