My kiddos are first grade students at a low-income school in AZ where 79% of students receive free or reduced price lunch. Their humble home lives allow them to genuinely appreciate and utilize the resources available to them at school. My students are always curious and eager to learn, yet have limited access to technology and literacy at home.
Luckily, my students home lives don't define who they are as learners.
Their determined, creative minds inspire me everyday. Despite the low-income area they live, my students come to school ready to grow and become positive influencers of the world.
My students have a second year teacher with a limited classroom library. Many of the books they have access to are above their level and are intimidating for new readers.
Having books that match their reading level and interests will increase their confidence and engagement during reading time!
Some of the books that are being requested are series such as Justice League, Amelia Bedelia, Pinkalicious, and Little Critter. Books such as these make first graders excited to read and explore books.
At our school, my kiddos participate in a reading program called AR (Accelerated Reader). AR allows them to take quizzes on books they have taken to help with comprehension. All of the books I am requesting are not only at their level, but are in the AR system.
