Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I'm a 2nd grade teacher at a 3-year-old public charter school in a high needs are. Our focus for our students is to lead meaningful, purpose-driven lives as full democratic citizens in a free society who ultimately work to make their world a better place.

As a charter school, we do not receive full funding of that of a regular public school. We strive to do more with less, but we need help. We have very little money for reading materials, particularly periodicals.

We need subscriptions to the student-oriented "Time for Kids." This excellent, weekly periodical is published by Time magazine. It provides current, relevant articles on national and world events and issues. We use this resource to study current events and for nonfiction reading practice. We will also use the reading literacy center to help with phonemic awareness and to build stronger reading skills.

Your donation will help my students to become better logical and critical thinkers who celebrate diversity and have global understanding of their world. I believe it is critical for students to know what's going on in the world, so they can make wise choices and - maybe - choose to get involved. "Time for Kids" allows my students to read a legitimate, reliable news magazine and strengthen their connection to the larger world.
