My Students

Each morning my students read and its a constant struggle for them to find books that they like in a decent amount of time so I want to stream line it to build interest and buy in. “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." -Dr Seuss

My students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds ranging from those whose families have lived in the area for more than three generations to those that are only here temporarily while their families are stationed in the state.

There is also a decent percentage of younger families who bought affordable homes in the area with the hopes that the newer developments will increase in value as more businesses and state offices are built on this side of the state. Our school is relatively new and was built as a result of the growing community with an emphasis on technology. Although it is a new school, the demographics of the students still represent a wide range of economic needs.

My Project

The book scanner tool has the ability to scan ISBN numbers on the back of each book to be inputted into my computer for inventory, check in, and check out purposes. The labels will be used to denote the grade level and points associated for each book according to our school-wide reading program. The colored labels will be used to categorize the books into genres and series for easier identification. With these tools, the students will be able to check out books that are interesting to them and hopefully in turn, it will peak their interest in reading.

Although my classroom library is vast, lack of organization has led to many lost books, students reading books that are not interesting to them, and constant behavioral problems due to students taking too long to find a book.

With these tools, the check out/in procedure will be seamless, and the color coding and labeling of books will help students to find books that peak their interest. Hopefully in turn student buy will increase and help to remind students how fun reading can be!
