Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students start the day, greeting each other and using the Smart Board to answer daily questions. They review their daily schedule and sign in to their schedules. This year, they will learn work tasks and adaptive living skills that will help them become as independent as they are able to become.

My six wonderfully diverse Middle and High school students with Autism face many challenges in the world.

They attend a specialized school in a high poverty neighborhood in NYC. They all have limited social skills as well as significant language deficits in both expressive and receptive language. The majority are non-verbal and communicate by alternate modes. They all qualify for free breakfast and lunch.

My Project

We are in need of storage systems in my class to help my students stay focused and organized. Knowing where their task supplies are will allow them the opportunity to get them themselves, complete the tasks, and return their own supplies. They will following either verbal directions or written directions to complete their tasks and return their supplies to the appropriate bins and containers.

This year, I have developed a brand new curriculum for my students.

As Special Needs Middle and High School students, they will learn adaptive daily living skills and work tasks that they will be able to take with them to a work site, an independent living arrangement or a group home and sheltered work shop. My classroom needs a new storage system that will help my students stay organized and independent.
