Students Together Against Negative Decisions (STAND) club officers Kristina and Tatiana implemented the Sandy Hook Promise "Start with Hello" and "See Something, Say Something" programs during the 2017-2018 school year. These students are advocates of inclusion, safety, and civic engagement. As members of our school, a highly academic performance technological enriched component of the high school, Kristina and Tatiana strive to balance scholastic achievement with service to the community.
Kristina and Tatiana are amongst the top five percent of the class of 2020. Their college ambition is to attend an Ivy League post-secondary school while maintaining civic engagement.
Kristina and Tatiana will serve as recruiters to involve their peers in being civically engaged in extracurricular activities during club rush, open house and other school-wide activities. Student leaders will also conduct civic-related events in support of MADD, Sandy Hook Promise and other service organizations promoting safety and mental health.
This project will prepare the student leaders for college and career readiness by allowing them to develop their speaking, organizational and presentation skills.
Our goal is to get more students involved in civic engagement through participation in school and community-related activities. This will build students social responsibility and promote a democratic mindset of our peers being a proactive citizen. We hope to inspire our peers to take part in extracurricular with hopes that they would spark others to also get involved. We need science boards and construction paper to make informational boards to advertise our club and club activities.
We would make the most of the leadership opportunity involved in implementing this project by having the responsibility for planning, organizing and executing all aspects of the project with having our advisor and school administrators serve as facilitators. Being directly responsible for executing this project will also allow us to build upon our leadership experience.
Using extracurricular activities to advocate specific causes allow students to have a voice and be proactive citizens. Using We the Students Welcome You project to invite individuals to get civically engaged in school and community activities will inspire students to learn personal responsibility and empathy in addressing safety and mental health issues.
