Help me give my students the gift of calligraphy! I want to use calligraphy to bring history to life by having students recreate the preamble of the US Constitution.
Sturgis, SD is my hometown. This is where I attended school, my children attend, and I currently teach 5th grade. I love that I get to teach and live where I was taught and raised.
Every day, I strive to meet the vast and unique learning and emotional needs of each of my students.
I teach 120 fifth grade students who are fun-loving and hard-working. Fifth graders are at an age where they have a knowledge of many things, but are curious of much, much more. Learning with my fifth graders each day is truly a blessing.
My Project
In Social Studies, my 5th grade students study US history. With this comes the study of historical documents such as The Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, and The United States Constitution. I have purchased replicas of these historical documents for the students to study. My students are always amazed by these documents and every year they ask, "What is that weird writing on them called."
This year, instead of just telling them about calligraphy, I would like to bring history to life and let them experience it for themselves.
The United States was built, and written, by hand. The Founding Fathers knew the importance of making these documents not just well written, but works of art. I would like my students to know the amount of time and skill needed to bring these works of art to life. Nothing reveals the American love for the handwritten, like the official draft of the US Constitution.
Using calligraphy, my students will recreate the preamble to The United States Constitution. This will be a wonderful keepsake that will remind them of not only their freedoms, but teach them the importance of handwriting.
Thank you for helping me bring history to life though the art of calligraphy! We The People...
