We STEMply Love Learning!!! (S.T.E.M. Materials)

My students need Legos, play dough and other S.T.E.M. materials to build confidence and grit in exploration, questioning, collaboration, and problem-solving. I'm in the business of creating lifelong lovers of learning!

My Students

My 28 energetic, hands-on, lovers of learning are lucky enough to be the first group of first graders to enter our brand new school. Together we are creating a new community from the ground up, and we are ecstatic to infuse that community with S.T.E.M.

From the moment my students enter the classroom, they begin learning by actively participating in the world around them.

They begin their day by working with their teams to construct their own designs using S.T.E.M materials. My students are excited to get into the classroom every morning because they are engaged in their learning and have ample opportunities to explore their interests and become efficient collaborators and problem-solvers.

I want my students to leave the first grade being excited and motivated to be life-long learners. They are learning that the world is their ocean, and that with a little grit they can go anywhere they would like to!

My Project

My team and I are excited to infuse S.T.E.M. into our curriculum. However, my school just opened in August of this year and we're lacking the supplies and storage we need to successfully provide a S.T.E.M rich environment.

With these STEM materials, I plan to enhance my morning STEM tub collection, and create an STEM area where all the first-grade students will come to fall in love with learning!

Each morning, my students will enter the classroom and get to work right away with their teams constructing designs they have dreamed up, which is a unique take on the typical pencil and paper morning work that many teachers start the day with. The Legos, blocks, Brain Flakes, cubes, tiles, and Play-doh will all be used by the children as they discover different options for building structures, objects, and places. Each month, I will supplement the S.T.E.M center with themed materials, which will allow my students to stretch their minds and engineer different things. I've also included some brain challenging materials such as the marble run and the iTrax critical thinking to encourage my students to figure out solutions to things that puzzle them. All of these items will be stored in the plastic bins, so that they are organized and easily acceptable for my students.

Fridays will be S.T.E.M days in first grade. First-grade students will rotate into different classrooms to participate in S.T.E.M. challenges, allowing students to benefit from others’ experiences and interests. Having chosen high quality materials, I aspire to use these materials for years to allow my students do develop quality collaboration, social, problem-solving, math, and engineering skills, as well as, help them develop grit and a life-long passion for learning. Thereby, enhancing the lives of hundreds of students.
