Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a year-round special education school, serving emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, and other special education classified students. My students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds in New York City and throughout NY state. Over 95% of the student body is eligible for free lunch, and more than 90% receive public assistance. They have exceptional abilities, and with the proper accommodations and modifications, they truly thrive in our school setting. My students are afforded smaller classroom ratios, personalized attention, and a myriad of specially certified providers that assist in their overall development.

The students who will benefit from this project are special needs students who will need financial literacy skills for post-graduation.

Not many of our students have the option to go on to four year college. The majority go to job training, community college with associates programs, or straight into the work force. Financial literacy is a must, especially as many of these students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds. A little bit can make a huge impact.

My Project

My students come from the black and brown families that experience disproportionate negative impacts of the racial wealth gap. On top of that, 100% of my students have a disability. By the time they reach high school and come to my door, most are familiar with the struggle. The struggle to pay bills, put food on the table, and to keep up with rent. When we talk about post-graduation plans and transition, the visions they have for their futures are blurred by the familiar refrain "who is going to pay for that?" Imagine trying to teach students tools to dismantle income inequality in their lives and in the lives of those around them. Now, stop. Because someone has already done the hard work for us.

The Legacy card game teaches about long-term sustainable lifestyles, diversity in careers, and overcoming under-representation in wealth.

Without breakfast, a student cannot learn. Without inspiration, a child will not work! Empowering our students to overcome the racial wealth gap will fan their flames to take advantage of the financial literacy skills trainings we already offer through consumer math class, culinary math class, and transition planning class. By providing the teachers of those classes with a Legacy card deck, we can weave this foundational approach to financial literacy through all curricula! This will create a common language between staff and students to increase dialogue around future planning. It will bring concepts down to earth and demonstrate the practicality and importance of financial planning and literacy. And it will teach students about stocks, career options, savings, and dealing with unexpected life events.

"Now more than ever, we must “ALL” be vigilant and teach our families, communities, and corporations that cultural inclusivity is the way to prosperity." - legacycardgame.com
