We Shall Overcome: A Civil Rights Tour

My Students

The 10th-12th grade high school has over 3,000 students, and it's easy to get lost in the crowd. I believe that taking a trip together will help students feel like a community and less disconnected.

The total minority enrollment is over 60%; I love looking at my class and seeing the diversity.

They comprise of different races, religions, ethnicities, language of origin. I've heard many of them express that they feel as though they cannot influence their community.

69% of the student body is considered economically disadvantaged. Many of them have not had the opportunity to go to places outside of their state. Those that have were not always given an option. We have a large number of students where are in this country seeking asylum.

My Project

If this trip is successful, students will be able to realize that they can make a difference regardless of age, race, or socioeconomic status. Students will learn that this has happened before, when they walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, visit the Birmingham Civil rights Museum, and experience the sculptures at Kelly Ingram Park. They should analyze whether those same strategies would work today.

I want them to become passionate about being part of a community and making sure they are a positive part of that community.

During this trip, I will emphasize that people are stronger together. We will discuss different ways that people have built unity within a community. If this is successful, they will want to share their knowledge with others and feel as though it is their responsibility to strengthen their community.
