This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love school! They want to do their best every day when they walk into our classroom, but they face many obstacles that most people never have to deal with in their entire lives. My students live in a large city and, unfortunately, in extreme poverty. The difficult economic conditions have caused many of my families hardships that are tough to imagine. Families are struggling everywhere throughout the United States, but, for my students, it seems to be doubly tough.

Parents are not able to participate in their children's education as much as they would like due to their work schedules.

Many of these parents come home on the weekends after living elsewhere---wherever they can find some work. My students are being cared for by extended family, friends, or even neighbors. My students are provided all their learning materials by me or the very generous people from DonorsChoose.

My Project

Every year, my students in first grade have little "take-home" books that are printed and assembled, matching the sounds, words and skills they are learning each week. We use a program that does not come with "take-home" books. Instead, there are master pages for these books that teachers can copy. They also have a lot of cut and paste phonics activities, math fact practice, as well as handwriting pages. I am going to need ink and lots of it! Since my students are first graders, they will learn everything they need in order to be fluent readers in class. However, learning to read cannot happen without continuous and frequent practice. To practice reading at home, my students will need reading materials that focus on target sounds, words and skills they are learning. Due to extremely deep budget cuts, ink to make these "take-home" books is not provided by the school anymore. These three ink cartridges would surely help me to make all of the materials that my students will need throughout the school year.

Everything that my students need, whether in school or home, requires ink.
