My Students
We are a Participatory Level Academics (PLA) classroom in Florida. Our students are functioning on the lowest cognitive level and their disability is often accompanied by physical limitations and delayed development. We use the MOVE (Movement Opportunities via Education/Experience) curriculum. It focuses on sitting, standing and walking. Many of our students have come in completely immobile and after a few years, they are ambulatory.
Even small gains are so exciting that we celebrate big time! We work on independent functioning skills all day long. Many students learn to feed themselves, potty on the toilet and access the school setting in age appropriate ways.
My Project
We are giving our library an extreme makeover. Our students and families have been raising money to help make the changes even more dramatic and user friendly. We're planning to paint, put in fresh carpet, add flexible seating areas, and of course, add new books. Many of our books are as old as our students' grandparents!
Our school has a large population of students with a variety of differences, both physical and intellectual. These books will help bridge those differences, build on the commonalities, grow bonds, and give students ideas on how to become a more cohesive, inclusive community.
This project will help everyone feel more included, more accepted, and more willing to reach out. I'm excited to see the library set up with a section bringing us all together!
