Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you recall the first time you became friends with one of the characters in your favorite story? My students enjoy peeking into the lives of characters who tickle their fancy all while helping them understand comprehension skills and strategies.

My students come from a tough world which offers tough realities, daily.

They step over dog dung, pass drug abusers who cop a fix in front of my students, all while saying a quick and familiar "What up". They live on the other side of the Harlem River where a child from South America will visit three different native tongues just by visiting their neighborhood stores. My students, who are served breakfast and lunch daily in school, are welcomed into a place which expects for them to leave behind the piercing words of a young parent who wants more for her child then she wants for herself, however is trying to lick and heal her own wounds. My students who are required to remain quiet for fifty minutes while they read silently have to be taught to be quiet let alone read independently and silently. There is no amount of money that can buy away their experiences, however, your donation will allow for my students to be able to travel to a world which they can create for themselves.

My Project

By contributing e-readers to my classroom library, your generous donation will allow my students to interact with their favorite characters, as well as virtually share their ideas with one another. My students love reading, but with a lack of resources, we sometimes can't get access to the books we want. E-readers would open our classroom up to a wide variety of reading materials. Additionally, since developing appropriate vocabulary is a big goal of third grade, e-readers have tools that can provide my students access to definitions of any word they want to know. I also believe it's extremely important for my students to develop the necessary technology skills that they will need to become innovate and contributing citizens. My hope is that e-readers will broaden their knowledge of words, as well as prepare them for the demands of the Common Core Learning Standards.

Your donation will allow for my students' learning to be differentiated.

Students who are tactile, visual and auditory learners will now enjoy the same opportunity to share their love of the same character as they learn about them in which is best fit for them.
