My Students

My students are vibrant, they are resilient, they are smart. They struggle, they stumble, they succeed, just as all children do. Many of them overcome adversity each day to walk in through our doors every morning, and it is our job as their teachers to welcome them with open arms, and prepare and encourage them to learn.

I teach 7th grade English Language Arts in a large, low-income, comprehensive public middle school with many students from refugee and migrant families.

Our students are bright, inquisitive, creative pre-teens. They deserve the best we have to give!

My Project

For the first time next year, after nine years of teaching high school, I will be teaching 7th grade English Language Arts. I'm excited, but I need an updated classroom library of YA (young adult) novels to help spark a love of reading in my students.

We read to understand ourselves, but we also read to dream about the larger world, and who we could be.

I've chosen some new, relevant and diverse titles that I hope will catch the eye of every student in my class. Among them are "The Hate U Give" about a young Black girl who witnesses the shooting of her unarmed childhood friend, "Akata Witch" and "Akata Warrier", a fantasy duo about a Nigerian-American girl who finds out she has magical powers, "Out of Nowhere", a novel about a young man who struggles with the resettlement of refugees in his small Maine town, and "Refugee", a novel about three different kids from three different countries, all trying to survive. Not only will my students be able to find books that reflect their own cultures, heritages and interests, but I hope they can discover new worlds as well.
