Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Like many children today, my students are visual learners. Photos and images grab their attention and get them interested and excited. Ignacio Estrada, sums it up best when he says, "If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn."

My students attend a Pre-K through elementary school in New York.

Our school is located in one of the poorest congressional districts in the nation. Many of my students have special needs, are repeating a grade or are struggling academically to achieve grade level expectations. Many of my students are from single-parent homes and reside in nearby public housing.

My Project

By READING every issue of their Scholastic News magazine, my students will be challenged to analyze texts in the ways required by Common Core Learning Standards and the new social studies state standards. The magazine, along with the interactive globe will help prepare my students for the "real world" as they learn the location of places along with the physical and cultural characteristics of those places in order to become global citizens in our increasingly interdependent world.

These resources are needed now more than ever to help my students learn about other cultures, geography, social studies concepts and themes.

Please consider funding this project and help my students embark on a virtual journey around the globe to become citizens of the world.
