Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My kindergarten students speak five languages and represent six countries!
My students are curious, energetic and love learning.
My students spend their day learning in both English and Spanish. We are a low income, dual language community school, where everyone knows each other. They have built such a close community, and really help one another grow as friends and learners. They do not always have all of the resources they need at home, but they care so much about learning.
My Project
My students are in a dual language kindergarten class, where we learn in English and Spanish.
At our school, kindergarten literacy is taught predominately in Spanish.
While we have created a wonderful classroom library, we are in need of more Spanish books, specifically ones that are using the sight words that we have been learning!
Every day, we have guided reading groups, where the students are meeting with me to practice specific literacy skills and begin reading! Having four sets would mean each student would have their own copy of the book we read, as each group has four students!
Learning to read in Spanish helps my students transfer their literacy skills to English, to become bilingual and biliterate!
