My students need a classroom library with books available for the many different leveled readers in my class and that is beneficial for guided and independent reading.
I want my students to be confident, successful readers by the end of the year. I want them to enjoy the amazing feeling one gets when you read a book, understand it, and enjoy it! My students are eager to learn, and just need the tools to help them achieve.
My students are English Language Learners and my classroom is a fifth grade Sheltered English Immersion classroom.
My students all come from Cape Verde and they arrive in this country speaking either Portuguese or Cape Verdean Creole, depending upon the island where they were born.
My students are between 10 and 11 years old, and are often being exposed to the English language for the first time. In order for my students to become successful in both speaking and reading English, I need to teach the basic literacy skills, such as recognition and sounds of the alphabet.
My students are so eager to learn! Imagine arriving in a new country and being expected to learn in a language you do not yet know? I am often the first person that they meet who introduces them to our culture, our language, and our world. I feel so honored to be in this position, helping our young immigrants realize the American Dream.
My Project
If I had the requested Leveled Books Classroom Library System in my room, I would be able to provide differentiated instruction to my students and meet their individual literacy needs. My students English language proficiency ranges from a kindergarten level to a mid-third grade level, depending upon how long they have been in this country. My goal is to develop and further their reading skills by having a classroom library that would enhance my instruction.
In my classroom, we have English Language Arts Learning Centers three times a week. There are five centers which include a vocabulary center, a writing center, a listening center, a read to self center, and a read to others center. The Leveled Books Classroom Library System would enable my students to have a library where they could choose a book based on their individual reading level, and successfully be able to read not only to themselves, but to others as well.
My students' learning would be greatly improved with the addition of our own leveled classroom library.
My students come from families who are working hard to make it in this country, but often do not have the means to buy books for their children. Being able to read is a skill that lasts a lifetime and greatly improves thinking, speaking, listening and writing skills. My students need so much and I want to provide them with the skills that they will need to be successful in life.
